How old is this guy anyway?

14 July, 2008 (13:48) | Uncategorized | By: xensen

old old man

I’m no spring chicken myself, and I don’t particularly care about a presidential candidate’s age. But, I mean …

McCain explains how he accesses the internet, by having his staff log on for him:

They go on for me. I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself.

McCain on e-mail:

I don’t e-mail, I’ve never felt the particular need to e-mail.

Like I said, I’m not a young guy — and I e-mail with my dad.

cate blanchett lionThe UK has approved experiments that will mix elements of human and animal DNA.

According to Times Online:

Experiments to create Britain’s first embryos that combine human and animal material will begin within months after a government watchdog gave its approval yesterday to two research teams to carry out the controversial work.

Scientists at King’s College London, and the University of Newcastle will inject human DNA into empty eggs from cows to create embryos known as cytoplasmic hybrids, which are 99.9 per cent human in genetic terms.

It’s a brave new world.

U.S. politics: confusing

26 January, 2008 (13:01) | weird | By: xensen

In this year’s South Carolina primaries, John McCain got 33 percent of the vote, compared to 42 percent in 2000, when he received 93,000 more votes than this time. But his 2000 performance knocked him out as a serious contender against GWB, whereas this year’s has made him the GOP frontrunner.

Go figure.

The true, authentic lyrics:

Deck us all with Boston Charlie,
Walla Walla, Wash., an’ Kalamazoo!
Nora’s freezin’ on the trolley,
Swaller dollar cauliflower alley-garoo!

Don’t we know archaic barrel,
Lullaby Lilla boy, Louisville Lou?
Trolley Molly don’t love Harold,
Boola boola Pensacoola hullabaloo!

The true authentic alternate version:

Bark us all bow-wows of folly,
Polly wolly cracker n’ too-da-loo!
Hunky Dory’s pop is lolly gaggin’ on the wagon,
Willy, folly go through!

Donkey Bonny brays a carol,
Antelope Cantaloup, ‘lope with you!
Chollie’s collie barks at Barrow,
Harum scarum five alarum bung-a-loo!

Bush’s pledge to do better

Now, more than six years later, it may be time to ask, “Is we improved?”

For every fatal shooting, there were roughly three nonfatal shootings. And, folks, this is unacceptable in America. It’s just unacceptable. And we’re going to do something about it.

junior high reading levelThere’s a site out there that is supposed to answer the question “what’s your blog’s reading level?” When you download the resulting badge (right) it attempts to put a spammy link on your page. Because of this I’ve removed all links to the site, but you can find it by searching.

For what it’s worth (nothing), my other blogs, right reading, frisco vista, and buried mirror score “high school,” while seven junipers has graduated to “college (undergrad).”

I see a lot of sites boasting of scoring “genius,” but to get that score you would have to be doing something very wrong.

Rachid Taha, Ya Rayah

24 November, 2007 (23:00) | music, video and film | By: xensen

I’ve always liked Rachid Taha’s Ya Rayah. This live version isn’t as tight as the one on his CD but it is spirited and delightful just the same. The lyrics go something like this:

Oh departing Traveler, where are you heading?
Your journey is bound to failure
How many travelers before you
Have sought the path with similar results?

How many cities and deserts have I roamed?
How much time have I wasted
Touring from one place to another?

Oh lost one, no matter how much you run away
Your destiny will end in exhaustion
Time has passed you by
And you have yet to notice it.

There a several Rachid Taha links at Exploding Aardvark.

Make your own flag

29 October, 2007 (21:18) | whatever | By: xensen

You can construct your flag from parts of existing flags at We Are Multicolored. But wouldn’t it be easier to do it from scratch? Anyway, here’s mine. The blue, from Cape Verde, represents the sea and sky. The white band, also from CV, represents peace. The Quetzal, from Guatemala, represents liberty.
